Oceanographic Data Sources

You might be looking for oceanographic data for modeling or other purposes. I like to use them for modelling there for knowing my options is crucial. Here is the list of the data sources or catalogues I use.

I update this list time to time.

Catalogues:

URL: https://catalogue.odis.org/

Type of data: Oceanographic data catalogue

Description: Whether you like UNESCO or not they try to unite the world together. This website is a good example of that. People list their own catalogs here. some of the refereed places are no longer available and website looks quite out dated but you can find some some good local sources of catalogs.

URL: https://www.gbif.org

Type of data: Biodiversity observation data catalogue

Description: This data source is not oceanography specific but you can various data about biodiversity.

URL: https://obis.org/

Type of data: Biodiversity observation data collected by IOC-UNESCO

Description: Combaning data effort my IOC-UNESCO. There are both observation data as well as genomic data (including e-DNA). Taxonomy is based on WoRMS. They have API and dedicated libraries for R.

URL: https://data.marine.copernicus.eu/products

Type of data: Satellite derived marine data.

Description: This is a marine focus catalogue of data from Copernicus project. Data ranges from level 2 to 4. They are well documented. I will write a post about obtaining data from it.

URL: https://emodnet.ec.europa.eu

Type of data: Marine observation data.

Description: This catalogue is Europe specific. Data comes from multiple sources and available to you. Documentation of data is a mix. some of them are well documented. Some of their data can also be accessed thru this interface, https://erddap.emodnet.eu/erddap/index.html

URL: https://gis.ices.dk/geonetwork/srv/eng/catalog.search#/home

Type of data: Various data collected by studies and cruises.

Description: This catalogue is created by International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) they are based on Denmark and their goal is to "advance and share scientific understanding of marine ecosystems". Most of the data they have are mostly from northern hemisphere.

URL: https://bio-oracle.org

Type of data: Oceanographic tempora-spatial data.

Description: This is a website of a project where group of people made marine data layers easily accesable for modelling. What sets this source apart is that the forecast is available in several versions and goes as further as Shared Socioeconomic Pathway (SSP)1-1.9 to SSP5-8.0. Data is shared under GNU General Public License which is great. What I'm not fan of is the resolution of depth and time series the data is shared.

URL: https://zenodo.org/

Type of data: All types of data.

Description: All types of data from studies can be found here. This website can be pointed in an article therefore there is no limit on topic of data available in this website. It is harder to find data compared to other sources but it can be more rewording!

URL: https://portal.medin.org.uk/portal/start.php

Type of data: Oceanographic observation data.

Description: It keeps a metadata catalogue of oceanographic data with focus on UK.

URL: https://dome.ices.dk/OHAT/

Type of data: Hazardous substances data.

Description: The Ocean Health Assessment Tool (OHAT) by ICES provides data on a range of marine environmental indicators. This includes information on biodiversity, such as species distribution and abundance, pollution levels including contaminants and hazardous substances, and data on marine habitats. Usually from west part of Europe.

URL: https://rdamsc.bath.ac.uk/subject-index

Type of data: Metadata standards.

Description: Hosts metadata standards based on subject. It is focused on UK but standards from some other countries can also be found.

URL: https://stacspec.org/en/about/datasets/

Description: Lists spatiotemporal datasets those which not only just oceanographic.

URL: https://data.neonscience.org/data-products/explore

Description: High quality biological observation data but with focus in US.

HAB (Harmful Algal Bloom):

URL: https://www.gbif.org/dataset/90dbe62a-5470-4aa9-b285-059e95b49936

Type of data: HAB observations

Description: HAB observation data from The Harmful Algal Event Database (HAEDAT)

Lake data:

URL: https://search.dataone.org/portals/GLEON

Description: GLEON initiative's data portal. there are some data various lakes around the world mostly US and Korea.

URL: https://www.waterqualitydata.us/

Description: Data from USGS and US-EPA. Mostly lake data from US.
